Series: Traveling #1
I was ordinary. Nice. He was extraordinary. And he wasn’t always nice.
Moody and difficult, brilliant and beautiful, Kes scared me and he protected me. He could be incredibly hurtful and incredibly thoughtful. He wasn’t perfect, but he was perfect for me. He challenged me, he took me out of my safe little box and showed me the world could be magnificent. He was everything I wasn’t.
Aimee Anderson is ten when the traveling carnival first comes to her nice little town. She doesn’t expect her world to change so completely. But meeting Kestrel Donohue puts her life on a different path.
Even though she only sees him for the two weeks of the year when he passes through her home town, his friendship is the most important of her life. As a child’s friendship grows to adult love, the choices become harder, and both Kes and Aimee realize that two weeks a year will never be enough.

“You’ve been sprinkled with fairy dust missy. The carnival is in your blood now.”
Jane Harvey-Berrick injects a whole new kind of magic in The Traveling Man. She’s a word weaver of the highest calibre. A painter with words. She doesn’t just tell romance stories, she tells life stories, and ones that will forever stand the test of time. As I was reading I could literally see this flitting across my mind in technicolour. Oh, what a movie this would make!
The Traveling Man tells the tale of Kes and Aimee, two innocent 10-year-old children from very opposite sides of the tracks. Aimee is a sheltered townie, a believer in magic and an avid reader of books. Her life is spent tiptoeing around her very strict Father, downtrodden Mother and selfish older sister. The only thing she has ever wanted is to visit the annual carnival that arrives only two-weeks of the year, and this time, on her tenth Birthday, she finally gets her wish.
Kestrel Donohue is a Carnie boy, at 10 he can already rodeo like the best of them and breathe fire, a little star in the making, but it comes at a cost. Long hours, lack of education and hardly any sleep, Kes is stronger than most but he knows he is different. Shunned by local town folk, the carnival is always on the move, passing through town to town, never standing still long enough to make a friend. That is until now…
The Traveling Man is a beautiful, poetic journey of the heart. A friends to lovers story that will enamour and spellbound with its beautiful prose, its passion, as it exudes its very own brand of magic.
Not all of this book is plainsailing, there are hardships, sacrifices, heartbreak and many a crossroad, the question is… when you are from two completely different worlds, what road do you take?
This first part of a two part story spans over 15 years as we follow Kes and Aimee on their journey of friendship, Love and self-discovery. It is one that kept me up until the early hours, and has planted itself firmly into my heart. Another resounding success for Jane Harvey-Berrick because The Traveling Man is quite simply, outstanding!
A Beautiful, magical, and heartfelt journey of the heart. 5 ‘Carnie’ Stars.
A Must Read!
