What do you do when your soul mate marries your best friend?
If you're Kate Evans, you keep your friend Rachel, bond with her kids, and bury your feelings for her husband. The fact that Shane's in the military and away for long periods helps-but when tragedy strikes, everything changes.
After Rachel, pregnant with her fourth child, dies in a car accident and the baby miraculously survives, Kate upends her entire life to share parenting duties. Then on the first anniversary of Rachel's death, Kate and Shane take comfort in each other in a night that they both soon regret.
Shane's been angry for a year, and now he feels guilty too - for sleeping with his wife's best friend and liking it . . . liking her. Kate's ability to read him like a book may have once sent Shane running, but their lives are forever entwined and they are growing closer.
Now with Shane deployed for seven months, Kate is on her own and struggling with being a single parent. Shane is loving and supportive from thousands of miles away, but his homecoming brings a betrayal Kate never saw coming. So Kate's only choice is to fight for the future she deserves - with or without Shane. . .

This is book 1 in the Unbreak My Heart series. Each book will feature a different couple as they chase love and their HEA’s.

Katie has always held a flame for her old family friend Shane. When she was a teenage she majorly crushed on him, until he crushed her heart by hooking up and eventually marrying her best friend Rachel. 10 years later and she still supports Rachel and helps her with her 3 children, especially with Shane often deployed for long periods overseas. Her relationship with Shane though is practically non-existent, especially as Rachel barely has time for her when he is home. She has made supressed feeling an art form. But sadly her love and loyalty to Rachel, Rachel’s children and Shane are to be tested to the extreme.

Shane adores his wife and children. He also is thankful to his foster parents who took him in when he most needed it, giving him the settled family life he so desperately needed. When his wife dies tragically, he is left with not just 3 children to care for, but also the miracle baby she was carrying. The only person he can turn to is Rachel’s best friend and the niece of his parents, Kate. His history with Katie is a difficult one. Once great friends, things changed when Katie developed feelings for him. Years later she has just become his wife’s best friend, but now she may well be his and his young family’s saviour.

When Shane and Kate share an unexpected night of passion, it leads to regret, guilt and bitterness. Shane is uncomfortable with his feelings and Kate is hurt with the viciousness of his words. But when 4 innocent children stand in between them, walking away isn’t an option. Will Shane’s ultimate betrayal be the end? Or will Kate fight for him, his children and herself?

I am a huge fan of this author. Being an MC romance junkie, I have read all her MC books and they are really up there with my favourites in the genre. So when I saw this book, completely unrelated to that world, I couldn’t wait to see if the talent that flows throughout her MC series would continue in a more NA genre. Well folks, flow it does. This book is fantastic and I struggled to put it down.

So a word of warning here, Shane is a bit of an arse. I have read many reviews that said they struggled to relate to him, and although I can understand it I also totally disagree. I think it is very obvious from the start that he finds Katie unnerving. And then suddenly he finds himself widowed and the only person he can turn to is the one person that evokes many feelings within in him and who he has a strained relationship with at best. He has lost the woman he loves and has to sit and watch someone care for their children. I was very sympathetic to his situation, but I certainly could have throat punched him at times believe me.

Katie, what an angel. There are not enough words to describe the love, kindness, support and loyalty she shows to her best friend’s family. The love she has long felt for Shane runs deep. But she was respectful of his marriage and adored Rachel and her beautiful children. Rachel’s death hits her hard, changing her life majorly. But it is her dealings with Shane that will break your heart. Is she a doormat? Absolutely not. She is patient, kind and all around amazing.

This is the best kind of slow burn romance. It is a fight for both characters, and until they can face the past and get past the guilt, insecurities and the pressures of their situation they will never find their happiness. Will it be together? I will let you read it yourself to find out.

A highly recommended start to what looks to be another great series for this author.
